I am electronics hardware developer and a real hardware serial port (rather than a USB to serial converter) is very useful to me. I notice on the XPS 8300 motherboard there is a header marked SerialPS2:- Presumably this connector has serial port (RS232) and PS2 on it. I hate the new Dell keyboard and would love to go back to my old style big key PS2 one. Why, why why did dell move the Home/End Insert/Delete/Page Up/Page Down keys around?

So anyway two good reasons to try and get this header connected up. Is there a card I can buy to link this to a bracket?

Does anybody know the pin out of the connector and the type of connector used? Thanks a lot. Parallel and Serial ports are generally a thing of the past on modern PC's and not even listed in the BIOS. I have a USB/RS232C serial adapter that will work with my old Dell Dimension E510 with Vista 32 bit.

But that same adapter (and two other different vendor models I tried) will not work with 4 different Windows 7 PC's (1 desktop, 2 Laptops and 1 netbook) that I've tried. The Adapters install in Windows 7 but the external device that requires the RS232C (a Singer Embroidery Machine) will not recognize the port on the Windows 7 systems. My home built desktop system has an older (discontinued) retail Intel motherboard that does not have provisions for serial or parallel in the BIOS. I tried a PCI RS232C board that I bought at CompUSA (don't remember the name/model) and it too worked the same way - the Singer would not work with it. Unfortunately I don't have an RS232C breakout box so I can see what is actually happening with the control signals and data.

I used to work in Networking and data communications and dealt with RS232 on a daily basis including troubleshooting RS232 problems.
